We vote for change when necessary at shareholder meetings, and work with companies to help address any issues. We do this in partnership with leading responsible investing group EOS at Federated Hermes.

When looking at whether a company or fund is suitable for our investment clients, we examine its plans to address three key areas – known as ESG:

  • Environmental – its impact on the environment.
  • Social – its impact on society.
  • Governance – its impact on the business environment.

We believe the battle against climate change is particularly urgent, and is as dangerous to the global financial system as it is to the environment. We address it in our clients’ investments in a number of ways, including:

 


STRICT CARBON REDUCTION TARGETS
 

We've set two targets to reduce how much carbon comes from the companies in our client portfolios and funds:

  • 25% reduction on equity holdings by end 2021
  • 50% reduction on all holdings by end 2030 

In 2020 we reduced the carbon intensity of the equity holdings in our funds and discretionary portfolios by 26% on average.

EXCLUDING ACTIVITY THAT’S BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
 

We won’t invest in any business that exceeds our criteria on:

  • thermal coal extraction
  • thermal coal generation
  • involvement in tar sands
  • arctic oil and gas exploration
